Two new fascinating publications related to sexuality and gender were first launched at the end of 2017: Blackwashing Homophobia by Prof Melanie Judge and Sitting Pretty by Prof Christi van der Westhuizen. Melanie is an Executive member of the Sexuality and Gender Division and Christi a staunch PsySSA supporter who, in fact, was a panelist in plenary at a recent PsySSA Annual Congress.
The most recent launch of their books was in Durban at Ike’s Books and Collectables, for Durbanites a treasure trove of mostly second hand books located at the bottom end of Florida Road (see related invitation below). Hoping some of our members made their way to partake in what promised to be an exciting evening!
After being almost three years in the making, the PsySSA Practice Guidelines for Psychology Professionals working with sexually and gender-diverse people are to be released soon. The guidelines were approved by PsySSA Council in September 2017 and developed by the Sexuality and Gender Division under its African LGBTI Human Rights Project. Three Executive members of the Sexuality and Gender Division (Prof Juan Nel; Cornelius Victor; and Chris McLachlan) formed part of the core development team, assisted by Suntosh Pillay (Chair of the PsySSA Equity and Transformation Standing Committee), Delene van Dyk and Liesl Theron. Watch this space for further details.
