Dr. Mpsanyana W Makgahlela is a registered Clinical Psychologist and Psychology lecturer based at the UKZN, Howard College Campus. He is a PsySSA member and the President Elect, of the Forum of African Psychology (FAP). His PhD project was titled “The psychology of bereavement and mourning rituals in a Northern Sotho community.” The aim of his study was to explore bereavement and mourning in a Northern Sotho community with a view to identifying and documenting the psychological themes embedded in this culturally constructed experience. His study has many implications for the field of psychology, and has recommended the transformation of psychology in South Africa at levels of training, research and clinical practice. The recommendations are intended to make psychology more responsive in our multicultural country, and coincide with PsySSA’s 2016 congress theme “Building a Unified, Relevant and Responsive Psychology
